 Great Central Railway

The present railway operates between Loughborough Central and Leicester North (a new station built in the preservation era) over a section of the original Great Central Railway which linked Manchester and Sheffield with London. The line is double-tracked for part of its length and allows passenger trains to pass at speed — the only heritage line in the country to do this! Predominantly steam operated, the GCR operates weekend services all year round and on selected weekdays at other times.

LOUGHBOROUGH is surrounded by areas of outstanding natural beauty ... and they are right on the doorstep! The area known as the Outwoods is a favourite spot with local residents and a must see for visitors; with hundreds of acres of woodland and miles of easily accessible footpaths the area is especially attractive in the Spring and Autumn.

Nanpantan Reservoir

Sited about three miles from the town centre and near the Outwoods, Nanpantan Reservoir provided the first piped water supply to the town. Authorised by an Act of Parliament passed in 1868, it came into use in 1870. However, within in 10 years it was supplemented by the larger Blackbrook Reservoir on the outskirts of Shepshed. Today this attractive expanse of water still serves the local community — not as a source of drinking water, but as a place to relax and for anglers.

The Outwoods

This area of woodland, dating back more than 500 years, was bequeathed to the borough during the 1940s. Between 1914 and 1947 large areas were felled and allowed to regenerate, but the area to the south of the car park contains one of the few remaining areas of original oak woodland. The Outwoods form part of the eastern boundary of the National Forest and because of its outstanding geology, flora and fauna it has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Charnwood Water

This 27 acre leisure area, based on a former clay pit and brickworks off Tuckers Road,  is about a mile from the town centre. It is popular with dog walkers, ramblers and joggers and, in season, angling is permitted. The lake is also home to the Leicestershire Radio Yacht Club, whose members may sometimes be seen on Sunday mornings racing their radio controlled yachts to the same rules as the full-sized versions. Ramblers may wish to extend their walk along the nearby Canal.
