Ideal base for exploring the East Midlands...

With a wide range of local attractions within easy walking access, or a few minutes' drive, Loughborough has much to offer the visitor — historic buildings, fascinating museums, attractive parks and excellent shopping facilities — and is surrounded by beautiful scenery. Situated at the heart of England and only a 30 minute drive from the historic cities of Nottingham, Leicester and Derby, it makes and ideal base from which to tour the East Midlands.

Ancient market town ...

Loughborough’s origins can be traced back more than a thousand years — perhaps as far back as the Bronze Age — but it was first officially recorded in the Doomsday Survey as Lucteburne, having 40 houses and a population of 176. It was granted a charter in the 13th century by Henry III, which permitted a weekly market and twice yearly fairs to be held. The fair is now held once yearly in November in the town centre, but open air markets are held twice a week in the town centre on Thursdays and Saturdays. The once popular cattle market was closed decades ago, but  regular farmers’ markets are also held along with a bric-a-brac market on Fridays.

... at the heart of Charnwood

Loughborough, the largest town in Leicestershire, is the administrative home of Charnwood Borough Council, a local authority set up in the 1970s. It takes its name from the ancient forest that lies to the west of the town and covers 108 square miles of northern Leicestershire, embracing both urban and rural areas.
